Kava at Work

Could Kava be the answer to managing stress and anxiety at work?

One of the world’s leading sources of stress comes from a place that we spend most of our day – the workplace. Job stress is incredibly common and has surged over the last few decades. When stress levels increase, so do the possibility of heart attacks, sleep issues, depression, anxiety, memory problems, and much more. Luckily, there are many ways to relieve stress in the workplace and one of the best and most effective solutions is kava.

Kava has been proven to uplift mood and increase stress management, while also producing relaxation. These effects are due to the natural compounds found in the kava root: kavalactones. Kavalactones are a natural alternative to reducing stress and anxiety. They produce a calming effect, similar to that of Valium and Xanax while being non-addictive. These calming effects can relieve stress, sleeplessness, and muscle soreness.

Stress can have serious psychological effects such as isolation, depression, insecurity, disengagement, and anxiety. Often referred to as “nature’s valium,” kava has been the subject of many studies that have shown an increase in overall well- being and cheerfulness. There has also been a study that shows kava’s effectiveness at treating anxiety without many, if at all, side effects.

Another unwanted issue caused by stress in the workplace is pain. According to officevibe.com, about 77% of people experience physical symptoms caused by stress. A labor-intensive job, as well as a desk job, can cause pain and tension in the back, neck, hips, wrists, and more. Kava, according to many studies, has been shown to alleviate muscle tension, reducing pain. This is in thanks to the kava root compounds called aryethylene pyrones, which have properties similar to benzodiazepines, or muscle relaxants. As kava does not impair mental focus, it is a great alternative for other muscle relaxants on the market.

Not only does stress cause tension, but it also causes insomnia, or sleeplessness. Officevibe stated that 48% of people reported lying awake at night due to stress. Lost sleep reduces attention, concentration, reaction time, decision-making, and memory, which can all lead to less productivity at work. By taking kava in higher doses, you can actually increase your quality of sleep without affecting REM sleep. A recent study by the Psychopharmacology Research Group found that kava significantly relieved total stress and insomnia, with few side effects, the most common being vivid dreams, making kava a more suitable solution for insomnia than alcohol and other prescription drugs.

Stress, whether caused by work or other hectic situations, can creep up and wreak havoc on your daily life. Luckily, it is also something that can be managed. With the use of kava, stress can be reduced, happiness increased, sleep quality improved and tension subsided. In order to get the best effects from kava, the following doses are suggested: 2-4 tablespoons of kava root per individual.
